Dodge Conversion.

This is how to replace your three speed transmission with a back A overdrive transmission with a three wire connector gas. Remember overdrive is only 3rd gear high range anyway. There are two wire transmissions out there, these have a non-lock-up torque converter. With this three wire setup you have a four speed transmission plus a torque converter lock-up feature.

The extra gear is 3rd high range. This will be accomplished with the use of three GM parts and some trick wiring. This can be made to work with a diesel motor also with or without a vacuum pump and vacuum regulator. We sell the parts for this transmission swap. Buy the Conversion Parts, Click Here. The center wire on the transmission is the hot wire and the two other wires are ground wires for overdrive and the lock-up torque converter.

The front wire is the overdrive ground and the rear wire is the torque converter lock-up ground. You can get a three wire female connector from a junk yard or buy one from us. Run a 12 volt fused wire that turns on and off with the key to the vacuum switch, then to the center wire on the transmission connector. This is a normally open vacuum switch that takes 7 inches or more of vacuum to shift into overdrive and lock-up the torque converter and 3 inches or less of vacuum to down shift and unlock the torque converter.

At the governor pressure tap on the transmission install a tee fitting for two oil pressure switches. Or any other combination of switches you may want.

At light throttle the transmission will shift into overdrive at 44 MPH and the torque converter will lock-up at 52 MPH. The pressure switches go on the outside of the transmission case in the governor pressure port. The figures on the pressure switch will only be correct if you have a stock tire size and rear end ratio.

Run a wire from the front pin on the transmission connector to the 44 PSI oil pressure switch and a second wire from the rear pin on the transmission connector to the 52 PSI oil pressure switch.

Now at 52 MPH when you step on the gas the transmission will shift back to third gear and the torque converter will unlock at the same time. Install a toggle switch in the overdrive ground wire. When the switch is turned off you will have 1st, 2nd and 3rd low range, exactly like a transmission with the same ratios.

Once in overdrive the transmission will not come out of overdrive until the overdrive solenoid is turned off, or the vehicle speed goes below 44 miles per hour, or the vacuum drops below 3 inches. The only electronic parts on a transmission are the overdrive and torque converter lock-up solenoids.

They drive down the street flipping a toggle switch on and off at every stop. This setup works automatically. The vacuum switch acts as a throttle position sensor and the oil pressure switch acts as a speed sensor. Running cooler will make the transmission last longer. The 4 tap is the correct one. Comments: The Dodge Dart name first appeared as a radically aerodynamic showcar in It returned four years later as a new downsized regular production vehicle. The Dart was available as three models: Seneca, Pioneer, and Phoenix. Engine choices included a cid V8 with either a two or four barrel carb, or a cid V8 with bhp. This ram setup was also used on the larger cid V8s used in Polara models, and a few Ram s found their way into the smaller Dart.

Production: Engines: V8 2bbl bhp rpm, lb-ft rpm. Comments: The D performance option was offered for the last time inbut it was toned down from the year before. It now included a standard four barrel carb, or optional ram induction dual carbs which were standard the year before. Production: The engine was slightly detuned forbut that was overshadowed by the introduction of a new cid V8 option, in either Police or Ram trim. Engines: V8 2bbl bhp rpm, lb-ft rpm. Comments: saw the peak of Dart performance when Dodge offered its Max Wedge in all fullsize models, from the bare bones Dart through the top of the line Polara Most racers preferred the lighter and cheaper Darts.

The Max Wedge was offered in two forms: one with compression rated at bhp and the other with The Max Wedge featured free-flowing cast-iron headers, a dual exhaust system that featured cutouts that could be unbolted for unsilenced, wide open running. The Max Wedge also featured a reinforced block and heads, a forged steel crank, Magnafluxed forged steel connecting rods, lightweight aluminum pistons, beefed-up valvetrain, and a deep-sump oil pan.

Topping it off were two Carter AFB carbs mounted diagonally on a cross-ram intake featuring 15 inch individual runners. As for styling, the Dodge Dart was all new forand sat on a inch wheelbase, three inches shorter than a normal fullsize vehicle. Worse, Darts were saddled with some of the ugliest styling ever to be seen on an American vehicle.

The styling penned by Elwood Engle had a minimum of fussiness. The Dodge Dart was available as either a hardtop or convertible. Both had styling that featured prominent headlight bezels that protruded slightly from the fenders and grille, creating a look that resembled the Chrysler Turbine car. Styling was generally clean and smooth, with a thick angled rear pillar.

All Darts were covered by a five year, 50, mile warranty. Engines: I6 bhp rpm, lb-ft rpm. Styling changed slightly with a new convex grille.

Comments: saw a further increase in performance as a bhp version of the engine was offered. Comments: saw an effective facelift with more squared off lines, a new rectangular grille, and rectangular headlight bezels. The hot GTS was available with either a standard cid V8 with bhp or an optional V8 with bhp.Ahh yes. The Dodge Diper. All rights reserved. More on this:. So, let's take a bit of time to discuss why anybody would gift a Viper with the face of a Dart, even in digital form. To start with, the orange beast whose body you're looking at is the Viper TA. We're talking about a track attack goodie here, as the model can be considered the middle point between the "normal" Viper and the downforce beast that is the Viper ACR. As for why the front end of the FWD sedan seems to at least partially match the rest of the vehicle, we have to keep in mind that both entered production inso at least they share the same design era.

Besides, Car Front Swaps, the digital label that brought us this mashup, has also left the Viper's vented hood behind, in favor of the Dart's more mundane unit, all in an effort to improve the integration. While the Dart was discontinued inthe Viper went to motoring heaven one year later. And while we have yet to come across an aficionado that mourns the latter, the V10 beast's fan base hasn't stopped longing for a revival.

And that's a shame, considering that the V10 monster could give Italian exotics a hard time for only a fraction of the cost, as we discovered while reviewing the American supercar last decade as mentioned in the article, even former Ferrari chairman Luca Cordero di Montezemolo was impressed by the Viper.

Meanwhile in the real world, Dodge continues to improve its muscle game. And, as the recent range presentation has shown, the Mopar people are doing a great job, from engineering to marketing. Now, since the Viper name enjoyed over two and a half decades of market presence, the business case for a revival that would land in the following years is certainly there.

It had an unbelievably low 33, miles when we found it! It had all the goodies including air conditioning and power steering.

It even came with the original window sticker, build sheet, inspection form, and bill of sale. Looks can be deceiving…beneath this hood lurks second Mopar Magnum horsepower! While the full bench seat interior and sheet metal are all original, the drivetrain has been updated from front to back.

We replaced the rear end with an A-body 8. We converted to the 4. The shocks are from Calvert Racingas are the monoleaf springs and Caltrac traction arms.

The springs are in the stock location, and the car has not been mini-tubbed. A Quickfuel carb tops the Magnum on race day, but is swapped out with a Holley Street Avenger for winter and cruising duty.

A Mallory Hyfire box handles ignition duties. The car weighs in at 3, lbs with a pound driver and full tank of 93 Octane pump gas. Using the standard conversion for an automatic transmission, this budget combination makes over horsepower at the crankshaft!

In this trim, the Dart achieved a best time of With the addition of the QuickFuel double pumper — and running on a true 8. Not bad for a full-weight street car with a junkyard motor.

This car is plated and insured, and sees street miles in addition to dragstrip action.

The 5. Used Magnum engines are readily available, and they make great economic replacements for low power, worn out, or displacement-challenged Dodge, Plymouth, and Chrysler LA V8s or Slant 6 engines. The best part about using a Magnum engine is that the expensive machine shop bill associated with a full rebuild can generally be avoided.

Unlike their low compression LA counterparts, the Magnum engines have better, more consistent machining, lighter internal parts, and performance compatible compression ratios straight from the factory. They also carry hydraulic roller camshafts, capable of generating more street-friendly horsepower than flat tappet designs.

Hydraulic roller cams are zero maintenance and there are no worries about zinc content in your oil or flattened lifters. Because the Magnum is a direct descendent of the LA series engines, they are nearly a direct replacement for an LA small block, and many inexpensive and readily available performance components for the LA series engines are direct bolt-ons.

We reviewed the major features of the cubic inch 5. We also discussed the interchangeability between Magnums and pre-Magnums, and we took a peek at Magnum power in Mopar Performance's crate-motor versions of the 5.

This month we bolted a hp crate motor into a '65 Plymouth Valiant and ran it at the drags. Questions of Balance Like all the cast-crank A-series Chrysler V-8s cidthe Magnum is externally balanced.

These measures correct for the imbalance of the reciprocating mass when all weight-sorted parts are bolted together.

Where earlier engines require Consequently, none of the pre-balanced components are interchangeable between the two versions of the Components that are incorrectly matched, inappropriately weighted, or improperly aligned produce bad vibrations during operation. Mounting Points Tabs on the flanks of the block accept steel motor-mount brackets which, in turn, hold the rubber insulators that fasten the engine to the K-frame.

Hence, Plymouth and Dodge A-bodies accept a block on a six- or eight-cylinder OE K-frame simply by using stock insulators, a modified right-side insulator bracket, and a production left-side bracket with a spacer.

Welding the spacer to the inside rear face of the bracket works best on the left side, but we fitted ours with a stack of flat washers instead.

The rear motor mount supports the transmission tailshaft on a crossmember. To accommodate dual exhausts, the right side of the crossmember was relieved for clearance. For fitment to vehicles other than the Mopar models discussed here, the V-8 Magnum crate motor's vital statistics are shown below. The 5. Since the 5.
